Die Antwort ist ganz klar: Ja.
Aber nur, wenn man in folgenden Bereichen einen echten Mehrwert bietet:
Usabilitity:
Nicht selten konzentriert auf die technische Lösung (welche Technik/Framework/Sprache) nicht auf das Problem des Nutzers. Man kann feststellen, dass Open-Source-Projekte oft aus dem Spaß am Entwickeln heraus entstehen. Viele Probleme sind jedoch originär keine Software-Probleme: Sie entspringen dem richtigen Leben.
Design:
Vielfach ist Software schlicht schlecht designed. Und damit meine ich gar nicht mal die optischen Finessen, sondern die Konzeption der Eingabemasken, Auswahlmöglichkeiten, etc. Nicht selten kann man sein Theme mit zwei Klicks ändern, aber das Lösen der tagtäglichen Aufgabe erfordert 3-4 Klicks.
User Experience:
Egal, ob man das mag oder nicht: Die Software muss auf den späteren Nutzer bzw. Kunden zugeschnitten sein. Das ist einer der Gründe, warum viele Open-Source-Projekte einer technisch versierten Nutzerschaft vorbehalten bleiben.
Natürlich ist es ein Graus, immer an die User denken zu müssen, die ihr Windows neu booten, weil ihre Lieblingsinternetseite nicht funktioniert. Aber man findet immer jemanden, demgegenüber man selbst wie ein DAU dasteht. Irgendwer hat immer mehr Ahnung von den Dingen als man selbst.
Auf einem Button, der eine CD brennt, sollte zudem (am besten fettgedruckt) “Brennen!” stehen und nicht “Zusammenstellung abschließen” oder “Fertigstellen!”.
Fazit:
Es gibt genug Gelegenheiten, in der Problemlösung besser zu sein als Open-Source und eine kommerzielle Alternative anzubieten. Man sollte vielleicht nicht versuchen einen kommerziellen Browser zu entwickeln, aber es gibt genug Tätigkeitsfelder in denen technisch nicht so versierte Menschen Probleme haben, die sie gerne mit Software lösen möchten und dafür auch bezahlen würden.
