Jonas Ich bin letztlich über einen Artikel bei techcast news gestolpert, in dem die Startseiten von Microsoft und Apple verglichen werden. Das fand ich einen recht interessanten Ansatz und habe mal die deutschen Repräsentanten genauer unter die Lupe genommen.

Vor dem ersten Eindruck
Ich war anscheinend noch nie mit meinem Laptop auf der Startseite von Microsoft Deutschland, daher werde ich zu allererst aufgefordert Silverlight zu installieren. Dieses Vorgehen kenne ich sonst nur von irgendwelchen Warez-Seiten. Natürlich kann man aber auch auf diese Installation verzichten.
Der erste Eindruck
Über Geschmack lässt sich streiten, daher sage ich nichts zu den unterschiedlichen Farben & Gestaltungen. Auf den ersten Blick zeigen sich jedoch sehr deutlich die unterschiedlichen Zielgruppen der beiden Seiten:
Microsoft Deutschland:
Die Startseite bietet Informationen mittels Artikel-Teasern für Anwender bis zu Partner. Auch schon die zentrale Werbung für das “System Center” zeigt die Ausrichtung an dem “Business”-Kunden.
Apple Deutschland:
Von vielen Informationen kann hier nicht die Rede sein: Lediglich 5 Produkte werden angepriesen, wobei man ohne Bildlauf wohl kaum etwas anderes als die Werbung für den iPod Shuffle sehen dürfte. Diese Startseite ist damit genau das Gegenteil und richtet sich nur an Privatanwender.
Den Newsticker mit den per Javascript ein- und ausblendenden Neuigkeiten halte ich für kaum praktikabel. Ich finde aber schon die Ticker bei N-TV nervig.
Für meinen Geschmack sind auf beiden Seiten die Schriften zu klein. Außerdem sind die Bilder auf der Microsoft-Startseite so sehr komprimiert, dass die Artefakte deutlich werden.
Pure Fakten
Da ich hier gerade an einem DSL2000 Anschluss hänge sind Ladezeiten auf einmal wieder total im Vordergrund, daher habe ich die beiden Seiten mal mit YSlow verglichen. Diese Zahlen sind natürlich nicht sehr repräsentativ, aber verdeutlichen meiner Meinung nach, dass ohne Cache beide Seiten ungf. gleich schnell sind.
Hierbei sind Silverlight Elemente natürlich mangels Installation nicht enthalten.
Wie könnte man das wohl vernünftig und repräsentativ testen?
(X)HTML-Konformität
Apple setzt auf HTML 4.01 Transitional, Microsoft schon auf XHTML 1.0 Transitional. Es gibt ja verschiedene Auffassungen wie wichtig nun valider Code ist und ich gehöre eher den Pragmatikern an, bei denen die Konformität nicht im Vordergrund steht. Dennoch gibt es laut W3C Validator deutliche Unterschiede:
Die über 200 Fehler bei Microsoft habe ich mir dann doch nicht bis in Detail angeschaut, aber dafür die 6 von Apple: 1 verkürzten (self-closing) Tag [Warning], 5 Folgefehler, 1 Input-Tag vom (noch) unbekannten Typ “search”. Für mich scheint es so als würde hier versucht konform zu arbeiten.
