Die eine entscheidende Karriere-Frage

Ich habe in der Zeit von 14-20 viel geschrieben: Gedichte, Kurzgeschichten und Essays. Kurz vor dem Abitur spielte ich sogar mit dem Gedanken, Schriftsteller zu werden (leider eine brotlose Kunst). Also suchte ich im Netz nach Gleichgesinnten und mir vielen schnell zwei Dinge auf:

  1. Jeder zweite ist scheinbar ein verkannter Poet, Dichter oder Romanist.
  2. Diejenigen, die am meisten Theorie zum Thema Schreiben draufhaben, schreiben die schlechtesten Sachen.

Das erinnerte mich an meine Skater-Zeit: Ich kaufte Magazine, Ausrüstung und die Klamotten und kannte die Namen aller Grind- und Sprungtechniken, konnte aber gerade mal ein halbes Dutzend davon. Und die im Skaterpark, die die schwereren Tricks draufhatten, kannten deren Namen nicht.

Schon damals dachte ich: Es gibt scheinbar jene, die das Spiel einfach spielen und jene, die sich erstmal um das Auswendiglernen der Regeln kümmern. In Bezug auf die Schriftstellerei heisst das ganze dann: “Es gibt viele Schriftsteller, die alle Regeln des Schreibens kennen. Doch sie können nicht schreiben.”

Daher meine These

Für diesen Post etwas betriebswirtschaftlicher formuliert:

Man kann die Leute im Leben in Konsumenten und Produzenten unterteilen.

Beispiel Blogs: Es gibt Leute, die Blogs nur lesen und abonnieren und jene die auch selber welche schreiben. Würde nun ein reiner Blog-Konsument selbst ein Blog aufsetzen, würde er sich im Zweifelsfall wochenlang mit Fragen wie Software, Layout, Schriftgrößen, Pflichtfelder bei Kommentaren etc. aufhalten, während der Blog-Produzent sich irgendwo ein Blog aufsetzt und losschreibt.

Wie das Beispiel schon zeigt, ist man meiner Meinung nach nicht generell Konsument oder Produzent, sondern in verschiedenen Bereichen eines von beiden. Was Webseiten und -anwendungen angeht, bin ich definitiv Produzent – ich frage mich permanent: “Wie ist das hier gemacht?” Hinterfrage Geschäftsmodelle, Datenschutz, eingesetzte Techniken und langfristige Perspektiven. Es ist, als könnte ich meinen Kopf beim Surfen nicht abschalten.

Bei Filmen dagegen bin ich absoluter Konsument. Ich gucke unheimlich gerne Filme im Kino und später auf DVD und anschließend die Extras (soweit vorhanden). Alles über “Making of”, “Behind the scenes”, etc. Aber ich könnte mir nicht vorstellen, selber in der Branche tätig zu werden. Da ginge mir die Magie verloren – Man könnte sagen Filme gucken ist ein reines Hobby für mich, bei dem ich richtig abschalten kann.

Die entscheidende Frage

Die eine entscheidende Karriere-Frage, die ihr euch selbst stellen müsst, lautet also:

“Was seid ihr?”

Der schwierige Teil ist hierbei, sich selbst einzugestehen, dass man vielleicht etwas oder jemand sein will, es aber nicht ist. Es ist absolut in Ordnung Konsument zu sein, die Beispiele oben verdeutlichen ja, dass man nicht immer der Schaffende sein kann. Aber seid ehrlich zu euch selbst: Manche Dinge sind ein schönes Hobby, ohne das man gleich seine Brötchen damit verdienen will/kann/sollte.

Wenn ihr seit 2/3/4 Jahren Blogs zum Thema Internetprogrammierung, -business & Entrepreneurship lest, vielleicht sogar Bücher hierzu konsumiert und hundert Ideen für coole Produkte im Kopf habt, dann fragt euch:

  • Wie oft habt ihr versucht, selber programmieren zu lernen, um einen Prototypen zu bauen?
  • Für wie viele davon habt ihr Code oder eine Executive Summary geschrieben?
  • Wie viele Leute habt ihr angesprochen, um eure Ideen mit ihnen zu verwirklichen?

Wenn die Antwort “keine” ist, dann solltet ihr euch fragen, ob die Internetwirtschaft nicht eher ein Steckenpferd, als eine echte Leidenschaft für euch ist.

Solltet ihr jedoch herausfinden, dass ihr definitiv zu den Produzenten gehört, dann hört genau jetzt auf zu träumen und tut etwas für euren Traum. Hoch mit euch, arbeitet an der Sache!
