Der erste Schritt, um Freelancer zu werden, ist einfach: Beschliesst es.

“Ich bin jetzt freischaffender Web-Designer/Programmierer/Grafiker…”

Ob man sich als erstes direkt Visitenkarten drucken sollte, lasse ich an dieser Stelle mal dahin gestellt, aber eine kleine Website solltet ihr euch einrichten. Als nächstes tragt ihr eure neue Beschäftigung in eure E-Mail-Signatur ein, überarbeitet eure Xing/Facebook/etc.-Seite und dann wartet ihr. Auf Arbeit.

Aber woher soll man, ohne Referenzen und Erfahrung, Aufträge bekommen?

Hier ein paar Ideen:

  1. Macht ein Praktikum. Um in einem Bereich Fuß zu fassen, muss man manchmal ins kalte Wasser springen. Es kann sich jedoch auch auszahlen, die ersten Gehversuche mit etwas Hilfestellung zu machen. Falls es in eurer näheren Umgebung eine Agentur gibt, die in der Branche tätig ist, in die ihr wollt, dann fragt doch einfach mal nach, ob ihr nicht ein Teilzeit-Praktikum dort machen könnt. So könnt ihr auf jeden Fall erste Erfahrungen sammeln, und – wer weiß – vielleicht bietet euch die Agentur anschließend sogar einen Job an.
  2. Arbeitet umsonst. Damit meine ich natürlich nicht für jeden. Aber guckt euch in eurer Umgebung um, wo ihr Arbeit entdeckt, die ihr auch ohne Entgelt machen würdet – für euer Portfolio. Baut ein Kumpel grade eine Browsergame/Social-Network/o.ä., dann entwerft doch das Logo, Screen-Design oder macht das Begrüßungsvideo. Solange ihr in der Idee/Nische/Umsetzung des Projekts Potenzial seht, drängt euch ruhig auf. Läuft die Sache gut, werdet ihr nicht nur auf der neuen Website verlinkt (bspw. im Footer) – Ihr könnt die Leute zusätzlich um Testimonials für eure eigene Seite bitten, so dass eure Besucher gleich sehen, was ihr schon gemacht habt.
  3. Teilt eure Erfahrungen. Wenn ihr etwas sicherer auf eurem Terrain seid, dann teilt dieses Wissen mit anderen. Schreibt Artikel oder startet ein eigenes Blog. Glaubt mir, es macht Spaß und bringt euch mit wieder ganz anderen Leuten zusammen.
  4. Sagt der Welt, was ihr tut. Beteiligt euch an Diskussionen (bspw. auf Twitter). Packt alles, was ihr macht, in eure E-Mail-Signatur (neuster Artikel, Blog-URL, o.ä.). Erwähnt eure Arbeiten wo ihr geht und steht, nur so macht ihr letztendlich die Welt auf euch aufmerksam.
